Why do I keep losing the SIP connection?

This is a difficult one as there can be a variety of reasons for losing the SIP connection and trying to find out the true cause can be difficult.

Firstly, you need to determine that it is indeed a SIP connection error and not a networking or router issue. The blue light will change to red when the SIP connection is lost, but when that happens confirm that you still have a network and internet connection. Confirm that you can still see the name of your network on the left of the WIP330 screen and then check that the phone can still connect to internet websites. Double check that you have the correct port numbers and that these ports are being correctly forwarded by the router. The freeware application
Wireshark can be used to monitor the data path from your phone to the SIP server.

Here are a few things to try:

1. Make sure you are using the latest firmware version, many obscure connection issues are solved by upgrading.

2. Try converting the Host Name of the SIP server to it's IP number or vice versa. I don't why this should make a difference but sometimes it can. This website can do this for you.

3. Ask your VOIP provider if they have any alternative servers you can use, often they have multiple server banks. If they do not already offer it then ask if they have a STUN server you can use (or if you are already using STUN ask if they have an alternative non STUN based server setup.). Don't forget to check the STUN port number you need to forward.

4. Try factory resetting the phone and re entering all your settings by hand ( not from a saved backup).

5. Test the phone by opening a trial account with another VOIP provider - there are many that allow you to do this for free - or else use my test settings which you can download and install from HERE. If you can maintain a stable connection to another SIP server but not your own then you know the problem lies with your usual VOIP provider's settings.

6. The WIP330 sends periodic Keep Alive data packets to the SIP server which replies to them and if this ping pong of data fails then the signal will be lost. You could try varying the Expriry Time and Session Timer from within the WIP330 GUI Sip Settings screen, but be careful to take note of the current settings and change them back if nothing improves. Consult with your VOIP provider over the exact settings to use if necessary. Wireshark once again can be used to trace the progress of these ack/nak signals.

Hopefully there should be something here that will give you a start in solving your drop out problems. But these arcane connection issues are often best resolved by changing VOIP provider.
