Why can't I register with my SIP server?

This is the area where problems most frequently arise. You can connect OK to your network - you can see the name of the network on the left hand side of the WIP330 screen - but the screen also shows the message 'Registering' or 'Not Registered' This means there is a problem somewhere with the connection between your WIP330 and the SIP server computer at your VOIP company.

In order to make the connection properly data from your WIP330 needs to be sent through the router from designated 'ports' to the SIP server and vice versa. Frequently these ports are closed by default and you need to configure your router to open these ports and stream the data to and from the WIP330. Your router may have a section called 'Port Forwarding' which you can use to configure the ports properly. If you have problems with this then visit PortForward.com, this website offers guides to most popular routers plus also an application you can buy which can set your router up for you. I also heartily reccomend PCWinTech the home of a number of excellent free applications to help setup and control your router.
If you have a supported router these applications will automatically forward the necessary ports for you.

1. Make sure you are using the latest firmware version
Many problems are solved by a simple upgrade.

2. Check with your VOIP provider which ports are employed and make sure these are correctly forwarded. Ports 5060,5004 are the most used, but sometimes others are employed.

3. Check if your VOIP provider uses STUN and use this if possible - you may need to forward a new port for it.

4. Try putting your WIP330 into the router's DMZ if it has one. The DMZ allows all traffic to connect and bypasses the router's firewall for all DMZ devices.

5. Try downloading and installing my test SIP settings. If these work on your machine then you know your phone is working OK and the regular SIP ports are forwarded. See here for full instructions.

6. Try using another network or router to test your settings and my test settings on.

If you see 'Registering' on your screen that means that the WIP330 or server is waiting for a response from the remote server. If you see 'Not Registered' it probably means that the initial login/password authtication procedure has failed.

The more technically minded can download a freeware application called
Wireshark which can be used to trace network traffic from your WIP330 through the router and to the remote server. This can be invaluable in analysing just where the connection is falling down and confirming that the ports are correctly forwarded.

There are a few, a very few, instances where for some reason even when everything is set up properly SIP still cannot be registered even though the same settings work with your other SIP devices. This may be due to some weird function of the WIP330 with the particular server type used at the other end. I have only ever heard of two instances of it.
