WIP330 Skype Overview

Skype/MSN

This is the most difficult section to write as it is the a subject where opinions and experiences vary greatly. For me
getting Skype and (later) MSN working was no problem at all and this has been the case for most people. However, some
people have encountered difficulties and others have never been able to get it to work and for reasons which remain
unclear.

What do the Skype and MSN clients have to offer?
The MSN client I have only used to log on to the MSN network for testing purposes and it appears to work. I have had
more experience with using Skype on the WIP330. It works well for voice calls, the user can log on to their Skype
profile and both make and receive calls either from their Skype or WIP330 phone books. The sound quality from my
experience was OK but inferior to that of the SIP. It can also send and receive chat messages either with built in
boilerplate messages from a pull down menu or via the normal text entry window. You cannot use Skype and SIP simultaneously and so will miss incoming SIP calls when Skyping and vice versa. One interesting point is that the only use I have ever
found for the top button on the side of the WIP330 is to collapse or expand the Skype screen!
There may well be times when a SIP connection may fail but Skype will work and vice versa, so having both can only be a good thing.

Some background...
Built in Skype and MSN clients, accessible from the WIP330 handset menu, were first offered with firmware version
1.00.07 and removed again with firmware version 1.01.00s. The last version to support native Skype and MSN was version
1.01.00 and this is the version I suggest you download and install. However, the later non Skype firmware did not
entirely remove the Skype and MSN components and these can be accessed and made viable via the WIP330 Windows CE
operating system. If you go this route to Skype, which can be done without downgrading the firmware version, be aware
that you have to re enable Skype every time via the keypad each time you reboot the WIP330 or quit the Skype or MSN
application.

The two routes to installing Skype:

1. Firmware Downgrade:
Easy to perform
Skype and MSN applications persist after reboot
Skype and MSN are available from the WIP330 handset menu.
Active Sync is supported
Advantages of the later firmware such as STUN, wireless N, call and network stability are lost.
Possibility damge to the phone during firmware downgrade

2. Manually via the PC interface or handset.
Non invasive with no danger of any permamnent damge to the device
All advantages of the latest firmware still available
Tedious and complex keystroke routine required to enable Skype
At this time works for Skype only
Skype is lost on reboot.
No access to Active Sync

The easiest way to begin would be describing my own road to Skyping on the WIP330. I was running firmware version 1.02.12S when I first learned of how to manually enable Skype and this I did with no problems and used the details of my pre existing Skype account. Some time later I was told of the firmware route and tried it and again it worked flawlessly. I have since changed firmware versions up and down several times and found my Skype settings to be remembered each time.
