Bad Firmware

Firmware

A fairly common problem with the WIP330 is that of firmware corruption. This can happen - as it did to me - by attemting to rush the upgrade process and start pressing WIP330 keys before the post upgrade reboot was complete. It is crucial to wait until everything is fully loaded.

What are the symptons?
Missing icons on the WIP330 and/or no GUI. When attempting to log into the phone receiving a 'script parsing' error message.

What can be done?
Usually not much. In my case it had to be RMA'd back to Linksys. However you may be lucky and be able to use any remaining firmware upgrade or autoprovisioning icons to force a new firmware upgrade.

If the GUI is down you can bypass it and go directly to the WIP330 Windows CE 4.2 operating system with these links (subsitute your own WIP330 local IP number):

http://192.168.1.23/NetworkAdmin/ and then http://192.168.1.23/sysAdmin/

Users of Skype era firmware versions can use ActiveSync to make a backup copy of the WIP330 operating system which can be used to restore the corrupt files. Individual files can be extracted from such backed up images with an application called STGViewer and then uploaded into the WIP330 with the Windows CE built in file manager over USB. Try and restore the Windows/WWW folder on the WIP330 to renew the missing icons.

One Solution....

WIP330 user
m0rt3n was able to restore his own phone to life by some minor tweaks to the WIP330 operating system. Firmware can become corrupted in differing ways so there is no certainty that it will work for you but it is certainly worth giving it a try.

You must be running an older firmware version such as
wip330_v1_01_00.bin that will support the USB driver. If you can also connect to your phone via your network then so much the better.

1. Install Activesync - 4.2 or 4.5 beta, both work.

2. Install the USB driver (see the archives page) by plugging the phone into the
USB cord and selecting the folder you unpacked the USB driver to in the unknown
USB device dialog boxthat pops up. Otherwise right click My Computer, select
Properties/Hardware/Device Manager/ and find the yellow icon for the
unrecognised phone icon and right click. Follow the instructions to
update/install the driver.

3. Use the ActiveSync application to explore the WIP330 and add or delete files.

4. Plug in the Phone to the USB port on your Computer.

5. Copy the SysSet.ini from /Windows to /Wip330 and say yes to overwrite.

6. Take out the cable and plug in the charger.

7. Go to the Information icon on the phone and note the IP Address and write it
into Internet Explorer.

8. On the page, Username should be admin and password should be 0000, if it has
not been changed.

9. When it has logged in, go to the administration and upgrade your phone.

If you have problems editing using Activesync you can use STGViewer to access the
SysSet.ini file from an ActiveSynv backup and edit it on your PC and before uploading it to the WIP330 with Windows CE's own file browser.

If that fails try using the Repair Kit available here.
